Today is the sixth Sunday of Easter. Not many people in my church know that Easter is more than a day. Jesus is still risen.
This is the week of ascension, on Thursday. The ascension is an often overlooked occasion for evangelicals. I think it is an important day. It is the day Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father, where he is at this moment.
We make a big deal of the life of Jesus, and his death, and his resurrection. But his ascension is also a big deal, if you stop and think about it.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are traditional days of prayer leading up to remembering the ascension. I think I’ll give that a try this year.
I do wish that the evangelical church had not discarded the use of the church calendar. I suppose it is way too late for it to be retrieved.
